The allure of Game of Thrones is undeniable. As a fan of the TV series, I've always been captivated by its epic storytelling and iconic theme music. Inspired by the many guitar covers I've seen on YouTube, I decided to create my own version of the Game of Thrones theme. My approach? To blend the warmth of acoustic guitar intro with the power of electric guitar, creating an interpretation to pay homage to this beloved series.
When I envisioned my cover of the Game of Thrones theme, I knew I wanted to start with the acoustic guitar. Its rich, earthy tones provided the perfect foundation for capturing the essence of the theme's medieval feel. I always like some medieval stuff, maybe because I fondly remember Iron Maiden and those hair metal bands like Symphony X and Dream Theater. I used my Protege Acoustic Guitar by Maestro Singapore, a reliable instrument that delivered the clarity and resonance I needed. Plucking those opening chords felt like stepping into the world of Westeros itself, setting the stage for what was to come at least in my imagination.
As the theme progressed, I seamlessly transitioned to the electric guitar, aiming to infuse a rock-inspired energy into the arrangement. My weapon of choice was the Ibanez RG321MH, a guitar I refinished to a natural red mahogany(which I did on my own by watching YouTube videos - it came out not really flawless). This guitar not only looked striking only on video but also offered the versatility and punch required for the heavier sections of the theme.I'm pleased with the tone it produced using Amplitube 4 with a Mesa Boogie Mark IV simulation for the lead guitar, dialing in a tone that cuts through with clarity and body. I definitely plan to use this guitar again for some other guitar covers in the future.
Gears and Software Used
Let's dive into the tools that brought this cover to life. My setup included the Ibanez RG321MH and the Protege Acoustic Guitar, each contributing its distinct character to the arrangement. For recording, I relied on a Focusrite Audio Interface paired with Reaper, a flexible free DAW that allowed me to capture and edit the audio to my taste. The Boss Me 25 served as my DI box, ensuring a clean signal path from guitar to interface. Although right now I don't use it anymore as a DI box; in fact, I now play directly into the audio interface.
In the VST side, Amplitube 4 played a crucial role in shaping the electric guitar sound, emulating the iconic Mesa Boogie Mark IV amplifier. Of course, I've edited the sounds and added some EQs inside Amplitube itself to further dial in the tone I want. I also incorporated Addictive Drums and Kontakt 5 for bass guitar sound, respectively, completing the instruments. To bring it all together, I used Sony Vegas Pro for video editing, ensuring a polished visual presentation that complemented the musical arrangement.
Crafting a Melodic Interpretation
One of my goals with this cover was to inject my own musical ideas while staying true to the essence of the Game of Thrones theme. I focused on creating melodic variations of the guitar lines that enhanced the emotional impact of the music. I don't usually just shred and do runs; instead, I try to make the solos sound cohesive and melodic. Shredding is my least priority; I prefer focusing on melodic elements. This approach allowed me to put a personal stamp on the cover, making it more than just a replication of the original theme. as my main goal in recreating this piece.
Challenges and Inspirations
And as we know, I still face challenges when covering songs because I always strive to incorporate my own ideas. Sometimes, the result doesn't meet my expectations, so I redo it until I achieve the desired sound or melody. Typically, I focus on listening to the solos. Often, I can tell whether I like them or not, and most of the time, I find them lacking, prompting me to redo them. Unlike Andy Timmons, who can effortlessly play a fantastic melody in one take, I need more attempts to get it right. However, these covers are helping me develop my skills in playing melodic guitar lines. I encourage you to try it, it will help you in the long run.
Sharing My Version with the World
After spending many hours recording, editing, and perfecting, I'm excited to share my electric and acoustic guitar version of the Game of Thrones theme. This cover is a heartfelt homage to a series beloved worldwide, expressed through the language of music. I hope listeners feel the same excitement and adventure the show brings as they hear my interpretation through its notes and chords.
Reflecting on this musical journey, creating this cover has been deeply rewarding, blending my love for Game of Thrones with my passion for guitar playing. Looking ahead, I'm eager to explore new musical paths, diving into different themes and genres while constantly challenging myself as an artist. Whether you're a fan of the series or simply enjoy music that tells a great story, I invite you to listen to my take on the Game of Thrones theme. Let the music transport you to the realms of the Seven Kingdoms and beyond, where tales of bravery and mystery come alive with every melody.
